It is very helpful to see the processes of the mind not as 1 self that is changing its mind all the time, but rather as a committee of conflicting interests, each arguing for what they want. That way, on the path to mood improvement, the task stops being: "I need to stop feeling X", but rather becomes: how do I govern the committee in such a way that at least the majority of the members are on board. A few angry voices does not mean: "I am secretely but truly angry", it becomes: "Oh, there are a few angry voices, I should be careful not to let them steer the ship."

Often we see our strong feelings as what constitutes our true self. Our thoughts might be flighty but our feelings are true and clear. This is not true, though. When a strong feeling is there, with a message, it is not helpful to deny that the feeling is there, but its messages should be regarded skeptically. Your anger will tell you it is a good idea to yell, your despair will tell you there is no point in trying, and your over-cheer will tell you that now is the time to celebrate, so throw caution to the wind. Learning to see your feelings as other, and not trust their messages, is an important step in self-management.

When you tackle an extremely messy living-space, a great place to start is dealing with the debris. Debris here means anything that does not belong in the space in the first place, the big three being (1) Trash, (2) Laundry, and (3) Dishes. One helpful technique is choosing a small task and setting that as an intention, e.g. "I will gather the laundry". Then you can stay on track by repeating a laundry-mantra or singing a laundry-song.
